You would place an order (issue a command) this way:

:gimme HAMANDCHEESE;bread=wholewheat,toasted;condiment=mayonnaise,&
mustard,tomato,lettuce;drink=DRPEP,large

                                Notice:

o It's long.  We used the ampersand (&) to continue on the next line.

o You can enter the command in upper- or lowercase.  MPE/iX doesn't
  care.  The SYNTAX DIAGRAM uses upper- and lowercase to show whether a
  parameter is a variable or a keyword.

o We followed the punctuation in the diagram faithfully.  (That page is
  called DELI if you want to enter that +  to go back and look.)

o We never mentioned CAN, PAPERCUP, etc. or SODASTRAW.  What happens to
  these?  The owner of this odd delicatessen ALWAYS gives you your drink
  in a paper cup, unless you ask for something else.  And he NEVER gives
  you a straw, unless you ask for one.  We didn't specify these optional
  choices, so we got the "default" choices handed to us.  Keep that word
